Project Description

Auto-summarization is a technique used to generate summaries of electronic documents. This has some applications like summarizing the search-engine results, providing briefs of big documents that do not have an abstract etc. There are two categories of summarizers, linguistic and statistical. Linguistic summarizers use knowledge about the languange (syntax/semantics/usage etc) to summarize a document. Statistical ones operate by finding the important sentences using statistical methods (like frequency of a particular word etc). Statistical summarizers normally do not use any linguistic information. In this project, an auto-summarization tool is developed using statistical techniques. The techniques involve finding the frequency of words, scoring the sentences, ranking the sentences etc. The summary is obtained by selecting a particular number of sentences (specified by the user) from the top of the list. It operates on a single document (but can be made to work on multiple documents by choosing proper algorithms for integration) and provides a summary of the document. The size of the summary can be specified by the user when invoking the tool. Pre-processing interfaces are there to handle the following document types: Plain Text, HTML, Word Document.

Project Description

Information push mechanism is a way of pushing the information to the user who would be interested in that. This technique is widely used in web-site advertising (showing the advertisements that a user with a certain profile would be interested in, yahoo! sites for example). This technique can also be applied in other areas wherein a user with a known profile interacts with an information system (such as a website). Based on the profile and on the history of activities of the user, a behavioural profile of that user could be determined and this behavioural profile will help the information push system in determining the content that the particular user would like to view. This project is aimed at developing an agent-based information push mechanism. In this system, an agent program would be montioring the user’s activities (like what he types on a word document, for example) and then propose to get him some help to perform his activity in a better and easier way. This could be something like searching a repository for the documents that would help the user in preparing his current document and then providing him those documents. Instead of the user searching for help on his activity, the agent takes the initiative of offering help to the user and so this comes under the information push systems.

This project is aimed at developing an online on-request courses coordination system that is of importance to an IT organization which has a training department of its own. The online on-request courses coordination system (ORS) is an Intranet based application that can be accessed throughout the organization or a specified group/Dept. This system can be used to automate the workflow of the requests that come from various departments for project specific trainings and their approvals. The training department has to cater to the training of the fresh recruits. It has a regular calendar and schedule to train the Freshers. In addition to this it has to handle the project specific training requests coming from various departments. For this the department has appointed one person as the on-request coordinator, who will be able to service the requests with help of ORS. The whole process starting from logging the request by a dept to servicing the request is automated. There are features like logging the request, to check the existing training calendar and checking the availability of respective faculties for the course, allocating the faculty for the course, if an internal faculty is not free during that period getting faculties from outside, report generators etc in this system.
